THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE CASTLE
The castle comprises seven towers, each endowed with a chemin de ronde (a French expression for “round path”) at its summit. The mastio is the largest and best defended of the towers, where the Lord and last remaining survivors might find refuge in extreme cases. Then there are the castle’s keep tower and the cylindrical dove tower, both incorporated into the inside surrounding walls. In the outside courtyard there is a building given over to the stables and hayloft. The imposing nature and the architectural sophistication of the whole complex had the combined effect of discouraging the enemy and making a good impression on guests.
Now let us see how the inside of the castle was structured.
